I recently had the chance to attend Katelyn James’ Workshop, and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about her business, family, and outlook on life. She taught us far more than business strategies and technical camera skills (although she did teach us that too). More importantly, she preached on the power of serving people and using your business to make an impact on your clients and industry peers.
If you’re unfamiliar with Katelyn, she’s a successful wedding photographer and educator out of Richmond, Virginia alongside her husband, Michael. I first came across her blog as college sophomore, and I have been a faithful reader ever since. Not only does she create beautiful work, but she has a true skill in educating and empowering other photographers. When I first started out I found her blog to be my number one resource in learning the ins and outs of camera settings, editing styles, and marketing strategies. She is incredibly generous with her knowledge, and truly embodies a “community over competition” mindset.
Flash forward a few years, and I was thrilled to find myself sitting in her living room, learning alongside eleven other talented photographers from across the country. We spent two jam-packed days learning from Katelyn, and then shooting alongside her in a gorgeous styled shoot. Sitting through hours and hours of content reminded me of just how much work goes into running this little business of mine. Posing, lighting, technical settings, making people feel comfortable, editing, delivering, blogging, publishing, timelines, scheduling, album design… the list goes on and on. And yet, as vital as that is, my biggest takeaway from the workshop was the intentional way that Katelyn & Michael love on their couples. And not just in the form of little gifts and a professional presence, but in the way that they truly invest in relationships. It’s inspiring, impactful, and important.
A few highlights:
-Staying in an Airbnb with five other photographers! Loved getting to know these girls and their stories.
-Snuggling with Bokeh Boy (Katelyn’s dog) during the lessons.
-The delicious meals and treats provided by Katelyn’s sister, Emy!
-Touring their crazy beautiful home! I’ve loved following their building process, so it was so fun to see it in person.
-Shooting alongside Katelyn during the stunning fall-themed session!
-Receiving personal feedback and tips on my website.
-Meeting sweet Evy, Katelyn & Michael’s precious baby girl!
I so believe in continued education and it was such a treat to learn from one of the industry’s best! I am always reading and researching and striving to improve the experience I am able to offer, and this was a wonderful investment in not only my business, but hopefully my future couples as well.
I can’t wait to share more from the styled shoot, but for now here are a few sneak peeks into #theworkshopexperience! Huge thanks to Katelyn James for a few of the images below.
